Leanna Elizalde found out that she had cancer six months ago. The doctors discovered that the painful lump that was growing on her leg was in fact a cancer tumor. She underwent surgery, the doctors found and removed the tumor, but the follow examination showed that there was cancer in the cells.
Leanna Elizalde is a senior at Woodland High School and for the rest of the school year she tried to balance her personal life, her school as well as battle sheath nerve cancer. She even went to the prom in May with a special drainage bag and medicated. And just as like cancer was not enough for Leanna Elizalde to handle she found out that her class absences caused by weeks of radiation treatments and two surgeries were the reason why she was not let to graduate. The absences caused her to fall back on school work and even though her teachers gave her the chance to write make-up tests and gave her extra credits to encourage her Leanna Elizalde fell behind. Some teachers gave her that much needed second chance but others didn’t. She will have to graduate separately from her class this summer. Her parents tried to talk to school officials to let her graduate on the day the rest of her class did but with no luck. Even her doctor wrote letters to her school regarding her struggle to persevere and overcome cancer, but unfortunately with no luck either. This is a sad story, as sad true story of how life can be hard. The story of Leanna Elizalde is an inspiring one; it is a story about getting your priorities straight working toward a goal and achieving it. She now is cancer free after the 6 month treatments and she can now go back to school and get her high school diploma.
