Lydia Angyiou is surely a brave woman. It all happened just over 2 years ago when a polar bear went wondering off in Northern Quebec in Canada.
The remote arctic village of Puvirnituq is just south of Baffin Island. Angyiou lives in a small town of only 300 inhabitants in the Hudson bay area on the end of march in 2006 she literally wrestled with a polar bear and won. She was walking on the street with her children when they heard a few kids shouting at them. The 41 year old
Lydia Angyiou noticed a polar bear grabbing her 7 year old and trying to eat it. She went in between her son and the bear kicking and punching the bear, the bear fought back and hit
Lydia Angyiou in the face. It all happened in seconds and the bear got on top of her. Lydia Angyiou then kicked the bear in the groin repeatedly. A passer by who the scene unfold ran away and came back with a riffle and shot the bear 5 times. The bear measured eight feet in length and weighed at least 700 pounds.
Lydia Angyiou is only 5 feet and weighed about 90 pounds. Polar bears are increasingly found wondering in areas where they weren’t seen before primarily due to the rise of temperature and their decrease access to food. At the end of the day Lydia Angyiou was extremely lucky to have survived with only a few bruises.
