Sybil Dorsett is a character in a book named Sybil. The book was written in 1973 by Flora Schrieber and is about a woman, Sybil Dorsett who suffered from multiple personality disorder and is considered one of the most famous or infamous cases of the disorder. There have been a couple of films based on this book including on in 2007 with Tammy Blanchard playing the role of Sybil. The story is based on the abuse inflicted on Sybil Dorsett by her parents and tracks all that happened to cause multiple personalities in her. It is a great read and made for a great movie. The story provides great insight in the mind of people who suffer from this, and sometimes are unaware of what is going on and how they are acting. According to the book Sybil Dorsett had up to 16 different personalities and at the time it was written it gave society a jolt about the existence of these types of people. It wasn’t that common then to know about physiological conditions like these, and mental health was a taboo. The story of Sybil Dorsett is a real story and the real Sybil Dorsett, Shirley Ardell Mason, lived in Lexington. She died in 1998 at the age of 75. The book is a must read for those who have close ones who suffer from this disorder, as well as for those who are interested in the sometimes awkward workings of the human mind.
